If 1876 is O and 1877 is C, how can 1877 be O and C?

Add the digits laterally, so

O = 1876 = 22 = 4

C = 1877 = 23 = 5

(O = 4) + (C = 5) = 9

C = 1877: Add, multiply and divide the digits as follows: 1+8 x 7 / 7 = 9

Therefore 1877 (9) = O and C (9).

Hi.

I wonder if David has posed the exact question correctly?

While I'd like to salute Sammy's answer as quite intricate, entirely random and definitely amusing .... I'd like to point out that the Oxford & Cambridge Boat Race was a dead heat in 1877.
