a niblet seems to refer to a single peice of corn.
a nubbin is something small or undeveloped, esp fruit or an ear of corn.

Thankyou all for your replies. However, that gives me a problem with 7d - 'Archaic word for a servant or attendant' (8) - I had 'serfhood'. An 'i' or even 'e' instead of the 'h' doesn't seem to produce a valid word?
