Thanks - had been thinking of 'goatherd' earlier, but it didn't fit my letters. Your answer's right - Chambers gives 'neat' as cattle/beast.

Am now thinking that 1 Down could be 'bludge' - if that means 'a botched job'. Can see the 'DG' = 'thank God ' but can't see the reasoning for the rest. And of course, I could be taking myself down the wrong track! Any views?

great word kludge,never heard of it before.
