EMIRATE - 'emigrate' without the 'g' (for 'good')

I think you're talking crystal balls!

Some of that you don't really need to know although it could be helpful.

What is certainly helpful to know is any letters that the solver has already filled in.

Yet I often see people asking for help without either giving any letters or saying that they haven't managed to get any yet.
