Tantalisingly down to the last letter. Missing the final letter of 28ac. There are only a couple of possibilities, but I don't get the wordplay. Can anyone help?

I too am struggling with the wordplay. I've gone for "E" as the last letter, because the resulting word is the only one which Chamber's defines as "failure".

Thank you turast. e looks most likely, but my (elderly) Chambers doesn't mention failure.

Eureka. An Oxford scholar is a demy, plural demies. Reverse the last 2 letters.

Well done PeterM. I will sleep soundly tonight. I always hate it when I do not exactly nail the wordplay. I'd heard the word demy, but not seen it written down. I wrongly assumed it was "demi", and hence the plural & correct wordplay escaped me. I wish I'd kept digging like you did.
