thanks again chris, see your reasoning and you could be right! another clue which affects 5ac is "All that's unusual in a girls name" 5 ----a. I took this to be Leila, (not 100% sure tho). that would mean that 5ac would be --t-l-.
any ideas?

5a. could be Little. Lit + t +le or LITT + le. take your pick. Bingo Little is a character from Wodehouse.
If it is that would make 5d Large Large(ly). Little and Large the comedians.

thanks terry, that also sounds good to me. however... the "o" that i think 5dn ends with comes from 11ac, "Public servant drunk Fosters in small gallery" 8,2,5. I've got minister of state. I should stick to The Telegraph, Guardians always drive me nuts. Also, got to go offline now... hope you can handle the pressure!

I think 5d is Largo..slow in a broad dignified style

can't fault your minister etc. so 5d must be wrong. I guess it has to be Largo. (music slow/broadly). You can still make a link with little and Large but now a bit iffy.
