12 Like H. King at the last, is led astray tucking into mere knotted bit of string (10)

Can anyone enlighten me as to the relevance of the first part of the clue in relation to the answer?

Thanks

ixion

I think it must refer to this Cautionary Tale by H. Belloc:
The chief defect of Henry King
Was chewing little bits of string.
At last he swallowed some, which tied
Itself in ugly knots inside.
Physicians of the greatest fame
Were called at once, but when they came
They murmured - as they took their fees –
“There is no cure for this disease.
Henry will very soon be dead.”
The family gathered round his bed,
Lamenting his untimely death,
When Henry, with his latest breath,
Cried “Oh my friends, be warned by me
That breakfast, dinner, lunch and tea
Are all the human frame requires!”
With that the wretched child expires.

I, too, didn't understand the first part of the clue. Very impressed with your explanation, jomac.

I've finished save for three letters, from two crossing words. 15a: Scots equivalent of fine lawn, open to all with money (7), for which I have _R_SSUM, and 5d: Hoist equivalent of tau above lectern? (6), for which I have T_A_LE. I can only think of table for lectern, but t-table? Have I made mistakes elsewhere? These Scots words drive me nuts.
