Three feet = a yard
breakers yard(more often associated with cars)is a place to get rid of/recycle old ships(or cars).

A yard was a beam on a sailing ship for hanging square sails. But it isnt a very good clue, I dont think!

Chald,
your explanation doesn't seem to embrace the word Breaker(a type of wave).

True, trevor, it doesnt. I am baffled by the clue and answer. A breaker is also a water cask on a ship but cant see that helping either!

I had assumed that Trevor cracked this in post 2.
Having lived near ship breakers' yards for part of my life, that was the first thought (not cars).
Seemed staightforward- Three feet- yard for old ships therefore breakers, breakers (8 letters) are seen at the seaside.
