Please can anyone explain how/if this is oats: Unknown philosophical principle employed in crop rotation. Apart from crop, I don't get it!

The clue is

16(A) unknown philosophical principle employed in rotation of crop (4)

Y = unknown
Tao = philosophical principle

rotated = oaty = of crop

I think it is "oaty". Tao is a philosophical principal, rotated gives "oat", with the unknown "y", giving oaty, meaning like oats.
