Struggling with theme: 20 and 11 possibly? but struggling to find matches for most of these esp:

9 down: (4,5) _E_R/_ _ _S_

17 ac (6) S_D_ _ _

45 d (6) A_O_ _ _

41 d (6) O_E_N_

and finally;

53 ac (5,4) _A_ _ _/ L_A_

9 down: (4,5) BEAR/CROSS
17 ac (6) SADIST
45 d (6) AROUSE
41 d (6) OLEONE
and finally;
53 ac (5,4) BALTI/LOAF

Obviously, in the absence of any actual clues, these can only be wild guesses. If you'd care to supply the aforementioned clues, you might get some more sensible suggestions.

I think 41d might be 'oceans' (as in Oceans Eleven).

What have you got for 4d? It looks as though it has to be 'Adam Smith' but what's the connection?

And, 51d. Is it vat?

Thanks - afraid their are no clues, just a theme, probably connected to the numbers 20 and 11 (2011).

For 4d agree Adam Smith most likely but cant figure the conection!

15a - ogresses

I'm thinking along lines of 'year -----' too for 9d.
