This is really stretching the imagination !!

a pace could be a step. One is often the roman numeral i, so an anagram of "a step i" could be "pastie" although I do not know what that has to do with Christmas, unless you are using up left overs.!

Thanks - an ingenious working out. I'm not sure if it's right, though. My brother sent me the clue by text 3 hours ago and I'll have to get back to him to see if he's got any letters by now
