It's larceners, Bridie - from larceny theft

as 41d is THIEF the answer must be LARCENERS

wouldn't it be a lot simpler if people just gave the clue and no of letters. And even better if people didn't give answers until they do.

I do wish people would give the clue, number of letters and any letters they have, when they ask for help.

I see what you mean. My first posting was supposed to be a gentle hint. Quite honestly I'm pretty cheesed off with the no clue postings. And even more cheesed off with the here's the answer anyway brigade. I'm thinking of starting a one man campaign which will slowly escalate into all out war.

Larceners is clearly right and is almost an anagram of cleaners. Where does the extra R come from?
