I set crossies just for pleasure. I wonder if some of you excellent regulars would like to try a few of my clues? Since they're new, no letters!

1. Couch becomes ragged on delivery (6)
2. Pep talks set to music! An encouragement in retaining staff? (4)
3. Begins using call girls in error (6,2)
4. Christmas hit's cancelled prior to bursting into scats (6)
5. A popular school for cricket, for example (6)

Thanks Terry, Crypto and Bullfrog. All correct.Terry's pointed clearly to 2.
Yes Terry, I use Chambers as my main definition source. I had looked at "start up" whose main definition is "rise suddenly" and then goes on to include "commencing". While "Start in" = "to begin" (just that - simply stated - nothing more). So I used "begins & starts in.
