someone calling theirself "me" pointed out that yankee doodle whatever predated the US civil war by a hundred years and he/she was right. I suppose it could still have been adopted by the north but this seems unlikely. Apparently us Brits first sang it during the American war of Independance-to describe the rag bag appearance of the american soldiers.
