A Bittacle is another word for a binnacle, which is a stand or enclosure of wood or nonmagnetic metal for supporting and housing a compass.

Actually, bittacle is an old, long-obsolete word - whereas binnacle is the more modern synonym

BTW wordplay is as follows:

Compass-case piece to set to work on, avoiding rear of deck (8) ?i?t??l?

piece = BIT

to set to work on = TACKLE
avoiding rear of deck = -K

so BIT TACLE
