Stuck with 2down. 'Cut tip for Walter afterwards'(4). I am confident NO_N is correct but what is the missing letter??? A nice puzzle but frustrating to be short of just one letter!

I would say it is either O or U

I'm struggling with the four straight lines and would appreciate a big hint!

Hi Rosie. I believe the four lines go through the centre square and represent what the seven men who have achieved the STANDARD are awarded. The unclued answer on the bottom line is a big clue. The lines extend to points which make the pattern symmetrical (but rather crude,if I am correct!)

For 30A I have C-H-ARK-HA

CARK is aust.slang for to break down (usually kark)
The first H is the unclued letter
HA is chap minus CP
definition is an Indian spinning wheel
